When Business Feels Messy (And Why That’s Actually a Good Thing)

Apr 22, 2026

Some days in business feel polished and put-together.

And some days… feel like you’re sprinting out the door, realizing you’re 20 minutes late to deliver an order, running on no sleep, and wondering how you’re supposed to hold it all together.

Last week started with one of those days.

Between a baby not sleeping, navigating big personal changes, and trying to keep up with both life and business, I completely missed the start time of a workshop I was supposed to teach.

And honestly? It shook me.

Because when you’re someone who teaches business, there’s this pressure to always look like you have it together.

But the truth is—you don’t need to be perfect to build something successful.

The Reframe That Changes Everything

One mindset shift I keep coming back to is this:

Instead of seeing mistakes, overwhelm, or “failures” as signs you’re doing something wrong…

What if they’re just part of the process?

What if they’re contrast—the messy, gritty parts that make growth possible?

Because the reality is:

  • You will forget things
  • You will feel behind sometimes
  • You will have days where it feels like too much

And none of that disqualifies you from building a successful business.

It actually means you’re in it.

A Real Coaching Moment (That Applies to You Too)

In my latest podcast episode of Business Is Sweet, I sat down with a baker named Lori who’s just getting started—building a pie business inspired by her grandmother’s recipes.

She had the same thoughts so many bakers have:

  • “I don’t have enough followers”
  • “I don’t think this is possible for me”
  • “What if I get too busy and can’t handle it?”

And here’s the truth I shared with her:

👉 It’s not impossible. It just hasn’t happened yet.

Every successful baker you see started in that exact same place—with:

  • limited time
  • limited capacity
  • and a whole lot of uncertainty

The difference?

They kept taking small steps forward.

The Shift That Creates Momentum

Instead of trying to do everything, we simplified:

  • Focus on one signature product
  • Create clear, easy ways to order
  • Build real connections, not just sales
  • Set boundaries so growth doesn’t lead to burnout

Because success in a baking business doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from doing the right things consistently.

If You Needed This Reminder Today…

Let this be it:

You don’t need:

  • more followers
  • more time
  • or a perfectly structured plan

You just need to keep going.

Messy days don’t mean you’re failing.

They mean you’re building something real.
